You’ve made a resolution to make 2025 the year you reach your fitness or activity goal. But sticking with it isn’t easy, as demonstrated by “Quitters Day,” which falls this year on January 10, marking how quickly some people abandon their goals. At Nevada Rehabilitation Centers our physical therapy staff wants this to be the year you achieve your goals, and we’d like to offer some tips for avoiding the common pitfalls that doom the best-laid plans.
- Start small to avoid becoming overwhelmed, identifying achievable goals like taking a 15-minute walk or completing a short exercise routine each day. Then you can aim to increase the intensity and duration gradually.
- Be consistent. Shoot for established weekly benchmarks like 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise, as well as twice-weekly strength training workouts. Schedule your workouts and stick to those appointments.
- Mix it up: Don’t allow exercise to become boring. Vary your routine by exploring new activities outside your comfort zone. How about swimming, dancing, hiking or trying a new team sport? Consider joining a club with like-minded individuals who can become fitness buddies.
- Don’t overdo it. Pushing yourself too hard right out of the gate can lead to discouragement at best and injury at worst. Some soreness can be expected, but not to the point of pain and discomfort. Rest is critically important, so build recovery days into your routine.
